Five years have passed and it still feels like a dream each and every day. The very best part has been getting to know the people of Santa Barbara. They all seem to have the same vision of sharing their unique experience and creating more value in life and they get how being healthy enhances that experience. We are passionate about helping our patients improve their health and making a difference in their lives. It is such a privilege to feel so connected with those we serve.
Alexandra Carmel, L.A.c
What an honor to be a part of the Alki team, a union of like minded wellness professionals that all share a passion for assisting those on the journey to greater health. I’m a California State licensed acupuncturist with my focus being women’s health and the treatment of chronic conditions. I received my masters degree in Traditional Chinese Medicine from Yo San University in Los Angeles, learning alongside world renown practitioners of both Eastern and Western Medicine.
My adventures in Chinese medicine began eleven years ago when I faced my own health challenge. I was informed by my doctor that pre-cancerous cells had been found and that immediate action was needed. In that moment, time seemed to stand still as I contemplated my life and the visions of how I always dreamed that it would be. None of which ever included a battle with cancer.
I refused to accept cancer as part of my fate and took it upon myself to explore all of my treatment options. I discovered that there were alternative therapies, as well as certain lifestyle and dietary changes that I could make to improve my condition. The way I saw it, my health was my responsibility and I was going to do everything in my power to prevent my condition from progressing. After doing a lot of research and consulting with health care providers, I created what I now refer to in my practice as a “wellness routine”. Six months later after a lot of faith, hard work and discipline, the precancerous cells were no longer present. Following another year of routine check-ups and nothing detected, I was given a clean bill of health.
I feel very fortunate that my condition was caught in the early stages because it gave me an opportunity to intervene at an opportune time. I also remain thankful for my cancer scare because it taught me about the healing potential of the human body and the importance of prevention supported by a healthy lifestyle. If we can get out of our own body’s way and provide it with the nourishment that it needs, then it will do what it does best – heal itself and thrive.
After my experience I realized that my true passion and purpose lay in working with everyday people on creating their own wellness routine to either improve a current condition or prevent a future illness. By taking an active role in their own wellness individuals become empowered to reach their maximum potential in health and life. Benjamin Franklin said “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”. In other words, preventing a problem from occurring in the first place will save a great deal more time, effort and cost than it would to repair the damage done by ignoring the earlier warning signs. We take the preventative approach in many areas of our life, except we often overlook the area that matters the most – our health. Ask not why your body is failing you; ask how you have failed your body.
I wish you all the best on your journey to greater health and wellness.
Traver H. Boehm, L.A.c, Dipl. O.M.
Hello, my name is Traver H. Boehm and it is my great pleasure to be a part of the team of amazing healers here at Alki Wellness Institute. Traditional Chinese Medicine is a beautiful compliment to both Chiropractic care as well as Myotherapy and I look forward to serving you on your path to elite health and wellness.
It is my belief that great health is not the elusive concept that most people think that it is. What worked 100 years ago still works today and perhaps to an even greater degree. What you put into your body this morning will have a profound effect on how you feel for the rest of the day. What you put into your body continuously will have a profound effect on your health in 20 years from now. The fundamentals of health have never and will never change. Human beings need to eat high quality, natural foods in a variety of combinations, exercise and move their bodies daily, sleep well and live with minimal stress.
As a lifetime athlete, former professional MMA Fighter, CrossFit Coach, surfer, snowboarder and martial arts enthusiast, I have seen my share of pain and injuries. Combining over 4,000 hours of graduate level education, including a rotation at the Venice Family Pain Clinic in Los Angeles, I have used Traditional Chinese Medicine effectively with numerous ailments ranging from torn ligaments to menopausal symptoms with great success.
Welcome to Alki Wellness Institute.
